Arrival : Review
Interesting and thoughtful Sci-Fi here from Denis Villeneuve. Arrival is a film with some great ideas centred around humanity’s first contact with alien life, specifically how we would manage to communicate with an alien race at all. As well as the intriguing communications and linguistics elements of the story, there’s also a great deal of focus placed on the issue of countries needing to work together and the importance of global unity. Amy Adams was brilliant throughout, and the scenes set aboard the alien craft were particularly strong. Stylistically it’s an absolute triumph with the depiction of alien language proving especially clever. It’s also a film that may well reward further on second viewing thanks to how its plot ultimately unfolds. I didn’t think it quite landed everything it tried, certain elements towards the end felt a little undercooked to me, but there was still plenty to enjoy here.
